5 Questions you need to ask before buying memory foam mattresses

Does The Mattress Pass UK Fire Regulations?

Has the material in the mattress been tested to BS7177 fire safety standards? BS7177 is classified as being resistant to a medium hazard, which is suitable for all homes.

However, without the certification to prove that the materials in the mattress have passed the test for BS7177, the mattress could be classed as unsafe to sleep on. Make sure you ask the supplier to produce evidence that the mattress is tested at BS7177 standard in the form of a safety certificate, if they are unable to do this then buy at your own risk.

All of memory foam mattress direct mattresses and toppers are fully tested to BS7177 standards and certificates are available upon request.

What’s the quality of the memory foam?

Memory foam can differ greatly in quality - density, hardness or softness, response to temperature, and also in its durability.

Due to increased competition in the market, more manufacturers are now producing memory foam products. This is great for the consumer as prices have been dramatically reduced over the last few years but consumers also need to be aware that a lot of sub standard memory foam has also come onto the market.

When buying a memory foam mattress, remember to check the density and thickness of the memory foam in the mattress.

The density of a mattress is important. The density refers to how much memory foam there is in a square metre of mattress. The lower the density, in effect the less memory foam there actually is. A low density memory foam mattress will break down quicker than its higher density counterpart, and when a memory foam mattress begins to break down it will loose it’s shape and stop returning to its original form, meaning you will have to replace it.

Be sure to ask your supplier the density of the foam. 60kg/m is a good quality density; and anything close to that number should be of good quality. If your supplier doesn’t state the density of the mattress, again buy at your own risk

The thickness of the memory foam is also important too. As a general rule of thumb the more memory foam in the mattress the firmer the mattress will feel, it is also advised that a minimum of 5cm of memory is required in a mattress to get the full support qualities that memory foam offers.

Memory Foam mattress direct use only top quality british made memory foam in all our  mattresses and toppers. The memory foam we use is classed as vasco 55 which means the density is 55kg/m. The depth of our mattresses start from a minimum of 5cm and increase throughout the range upto a maximium of 12cm

Where is it from?

Make sure you know where your memory foam is manufactured. A lot of suppliers now import memory foam from abroad and although the mattresses seem of good quality and the prices may seem attractive, be aware this type of memory foam is usually of very poor quality and will only last a few years before the mattress starts to break down and will need replacing.

All of Memory foam mattress direct products are produced in the UK. All raw materials are produced from Vitafoam -  The leading UK manaufacturer of foam and memory  foam materials.

Is it guaranteed?

Make sure your memory foam mattress is guaranteed against any defects or problems. Be wary if you are not offered any guarantee on your products as the supplier may be aware that the poor quality of materials won’t last very long!!

Memory foam mattress direct offer a 5 year guarantee with every product. If your product develops any abnormalities in the first 5 years of life, Memory foam mattress direct will replace it for you free of charge.
