Night-time partners: how size really does matter!

November 18th, 2011

We think memory foam is great – so it got us thinking about how we can really challenge it.

We’ve all had the experience of a bad night’s sleep, and pretty much all of us have had the experience of a bad night’s sleep caused by a partner. Whether it’s tossing and turning, getting too hot, stealing the entire duvet, or snoring, sleeping in the same bed as someone who fidgets during the night is a complete pain. More and more couples are resorting to the very fifties solution of sleeping in separate beds, although we wouldn’t recommend it as it can bring as many problems as it solves: you’ll need more space, another bed, more bed linen…the list goes on. And, of course, you get to miss out on the most important night-time activity of all.

Yes, arguing over whose turn it is to put out the light.

Partners can also suffer from a bad night’s sleep if they are particularly different in height or weight, as well as sleeping and lifestyle habits. Uneven distribution across a regular open spring or pocket spring mattress can damage the springs themselves and means that, when you come to turn the mattress, neither or you will be able to find a comfortable sleeping position.

So what’s the solution? Really, you need to find a bed that can accommodate both of you without either of you being uncomfortable. For height differences, make sure the bed is long enough for both of you to sleep comfortable, and opting for a memory foam mattress will also iron out any problems with weight difference as the foam moulds to each unique body shape for all over support. We think that a memory foam mattress can be the cure to all ills in this department, and there’s many a celebrity couple who would benefit from a soothing night’s sleep – despite their differences.

Musician Jamie Cullum and author’s daughter model-turned-chef Sophie Dahl rocked the boat a little when they embarked on their relationship in 2010, with Sophie’s stature and seductive curves contrasting sharply with the dinky piano-tinkler Jamie. But we are assured (probably) that their continuing success in love has been aided by a comfortable night’s sleep, despite their height difference. And if Jamie really can’t nod off, at least Sophie could make him up a little bed with one of the pillowcases.

A similar difference in height was noticeable between Tom Cruise, Scientology poster boy, and the flame-haired Nicole Kidman during their relationship.

Famously quipping ‘now I can wear heels’ when asked to comment on their breakup, their marriage may have been saved by a supportive bed that could accommodate their size difference and allow both to get a relaxing, de-stressing night’s sleep. Actually, that’s unlikely: with Cruise being the sofa-jumping chap he is, he’s probably happier with Katie.

However, the couple that really don’t seem to let their differences get between them must be basketball player Shaquille O’Neal and his new lady, reality TV show star Nicole Alex ander. Sounds simple enough, right? But at 7’1” and 5’2” respectively this couple can barely hear each other when they speak, let alone trying to work out how to have a comfortable night’s sleep.

Aside from having a made-to-measure bed, we’d recommend that Shaquille and Nicole definitely invest in a luxurious memory foam mattress to help counteract their super-size difference! As well as helping Shaquille’s aches and pains that he might suffer from all that sporting action, a memory foam mattress will mean that Nicole won’t get flung in the air every time basketball’s big boy shifts his position.

Shock waves and movement are absorbed by the memory foam mattress as each partner can find their unique sleeping position – ensuring a long and happy relationship for all involved.
